Very few Americans actually know what it is like to be food insecure. In the US, being food insecure is often still many times better than being food insecure in other regions.
Hello! My name is Garrett Zhou, and my mission is to help end food insecurity. Through this blog, I hope to educate many of the unaware and turn the aware into supporters of the cause. I occasionally post about specific case studies like the Russia-Ukraine war, and also post about food insecurity in general. About Me
My name is Garrett Zhou, and I am a high school sophomore currently attending Durham Academy High School. My passion is, and has been for a long time, food insecurity. I had known about it for a while like many of you, but I had not given it much thought. However, when I learned that more than enough food is produced to feed everyone, yet millions go hungry every day, I decided to act. Since then, I have started blogging about food security and hunger related topics, volunteered over 100 hours at my local food banks. I have found time in my busy schedule to help people, and you should too! Thanks, and I hope I encourage you to support!
I founded HarvestHelp.app, a platform connecting food banks, suppliers, and volunteers so surplus food reaches families instead of landfills. The platform turns excess food into meals for families in need. The platform’s differentiator is Bridging the gap between waste and need by empowering drivers as volunteer couriers. Mobilizing drivers particularly student drivers to turn waste into resource.
I am a high school researcher and Duke Libraries mentee, and conducted a study on the multi-dimensional drivers of global hunger and food insecurity. This is a collaborative project in the interdisciplinary field of Computational Humanity / Digital Humanity. I built this interactive Global Hunger Vulnerability Dashboard to visualize and explore how societal, behavioral, economic, health, climate, and crisis factors combine to shape hunger risk across countries – helping identify the most vulnerable regions and the forces that drive food insecurity. My research aimed to achieve: 1) Mapping the drivers of global hunger; 2) Data-driven insight into food insecurity risk; 3) Investigate solutions that turn hunger data into understanding and policies; 4) Visualizing vulnerability, country by country
